January 16 Deadline for Essay and Illustration Submissions
Posted Dec. 4, 2012The East Liverpool-Wellsville NAACP, the Kent State University at East Liverpool Campus Diversity Committee, English Department and Campus Dean, are calling for essays and illustrations for the Martin Luther King/ Coretta Scott King essay contest from students in schools and from other interested persons.
We ask you not to write an essay about Dr. King. Instead we are asking that you read a book that has won the Coretta Scott King Award of the American Library Association, an award to honor both the work of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King. You may write an essay or create art work about what this book means to you, or to the struggle for equality and justice in America, including what this book means to you personally in realizing the legacy of strength of those who have worked for social justice to create better conditions for families and individuals, and create a more just society. You could also write about or create an illustration about the ways that the book or books you read allow all of us to think about the road we still need to travel to gain equity.
An essay should be no less than five pages handwritten or three pages typed (double-spaced, 1” margins, 12 pt. font) and should include the name, grade, school, author of the submission and the book title. The title of the book and the author should appear on the first page of your essay. Indentifying information should be on the back of illustrations, including name, grade, teacher, school, author and title of the book.
Bookstore prizes will be awarded by Kent State University at East Liverpool in the amounts of $50, $35, and $25.00 for each category. Categories include elementary, middle, and high school. An award of $35.00 in bookstore merchandise will also be presented for a winning march poster.
