Student essay and poster submissions from college and secondary students about the environment and environmental justice issues are invited for the 9th Annual Earth Day Environmental Justice Conference at Kent State University Campus at East Liverpool. The annual contests have bookstore voucher prizes of $75.00, $50.00, and $35.00 for each category. Submissions will be presented at the conference held in the Slak Shak, Main Classroom Building, KSUEL, 400 East Fourth Street on April 20, 2013. Papers will be read at 9 a.m., and posters will be presented at 12:30 p.m. Awards for all contests will be presented at 1:30 p.m.
Essays should be eight to ten pages in length allowing for a 15 to 20 minute presentation. Awards for the essay contests will be presented in three categories:
- Science Based Essays that synthesize a body of research and sources based on evidence. Although these are not persuasive essays and no opinion should be included, the essay can have a point of view. Sources must be cited.
- Humanities / Eco-feminist Based Academic Essays that begin with literature, history, or social theory that examines the human or other costs of environmental pollution or that discusses solutions to problems. This essay requires sources, but the writer can take a position and can draw conclusions using opinions. Sources must be cited.
- Personal (Creative) Essay using and citing an eco-feminist text or research as a starting point moving into personal experience, or a fully personal essay. This essay will form a cohesive text that examines one aspect of the environment or environmental justice. Any sources used must be cited.
Poster submissions will consist of a concise presentation of an environmental issue on triptych poster board that stands alone. The poster should be self-explanatory, and should be accompanied with a brief paper that also provides citations for any copyrighted images used.
Papers should include cover sheet with title and identifying information including an id number. Title and id number should be included in the header of the paper. Essay submissions are due by Friday, April 13. These should be sent by e-mail to email@example.com. Posters are due the day of the conference and will be set up and judged on site.
This conference is sponsored by Kent State University at East Liverpool, Dean Stephen Nameth and Assistant Dean Susan Rossi, the KSUEL Bookstore, The KSUEL Environmental Club, and the KSUEL Honors, Biology and English and Sociology Depts.
