Broadway show tunes sung by budding artists and a choral concert of classical and familiar music will be the features of Kent State at Salem’s Symphonious Sunday Series this spring. Both concerts held on March 21 and May 2, will begin at 3 p.m. in the campus’ City Center Auditorium, located in downtown Salem.
 
On March 21, for the third year in a row, the Musical Theatre Senior Showcase from Kent State University’s School of Theatre and Dance will bring Broadway to Salem as students perform tunes from some of Broadway’s best musicals. This event is the senior musical theatre class’ last show before traveling to New York City to perform for agents and casting directors. Past Kent State musical theatre students have gone on to win Tony Awards, including Alice Ripley, who won the 2009 award for best actress in a musical for “Next to Normal.”
Prior to the performance, KSU theatre professors Terri Kent and Jonathan Swoboda will conduct a masterclass for high school students wishing to be coached on a musical theatre song.  The session will begin at 2:00 p.m.  Interested students should bring a copy of their music.  An accompanist will be provided. On May 2, the Kent Salem Community Choir will present its annual spring concert featuring Franz Schubert’s Mass in G.  Other selections include “Sure on This Shining Night” by American composer Morten Lauridsen, “Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal,” the African-American Spirituals “Hush, Somebody’s Callin’ My Name” and “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit,” and an arrangement of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
 
“I’ve wanted to perform the Schubert mass with the Salem choir for some time,” said conductor Kerry Glann.  “It’s a charming, smaller extended work, and with the development and success of the choir recently, I think they will do a fine job singing it.  The rest of the program offers more popularly-known music, so hopefully there will be something for everyone’s tastes.”
 
The Kent Salem Community Choir is also preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary season next year.
 
The Kent State at Salem City Center is located at 230 North Lincoln Ave. in downtown Salem. Parking, including handicapped parking, is located at the rear of the building. Additional parking is available in lots to the north of the building, or in the municipal lot off Second Street.
