Kent State Mother and Daughter Graduate Together

Posted Jun. 19, 2012

Achieving a degree in higher education takes hard work, perseverance and drive. Criminology and Justice Studies graduates, Katie Parr and Dena Bentz, demonstrated all of these characteristics during their academic journey at Kent State University at East Liverpool. The graduates were more than just classmates, they were best friends and mother and daughter.

Mother and Daughter Graduate Together Spring 2012 “Attending Kent State with my mom has been a dream come true,” Parr said. “I could not imagine a better study buddy.” “We motivated, encouraged and pushed each other to succeed.”  Parr is now studying for the LSAT and is planning on attending law school this fall with hopes of a future career as a successful politician.

“It wasn’t always easy but it was definitely worth it,” added Bentz.  “My daughter’s ambitious attitude was so inspiring during the whole journey; I couldn’t have done it without her support.” Bentz is currently employed at Frankovitch, Anetakis, Colantonio & Simon, a law firm located in Weirton, West Virginia. In the future she hopes to continue her education and to someday teach as a professor at Kent State. “I would love to be a part of providing others with a high-quality education,” she said.

The Criminology and Justice Studies curriculum provides students with a firm understanding of the basic institutions of the criminal justice system. Students are also exposed to criminological theory and diversity courses, which help them understand the complex relationship between the individual, society and the criminal justice system.

Between Kent State East Liverpool and Kent State Salem, more than 25 degrees are offered locally, including 12 bachelor’s degrees.
