The guitar ensemble from the Lincoln Park Performing Guitar Ensemble will perform Sunday as part of Kent State Salem’s Symphonious Sunday Series. The free concert will be held at 3 p.m. in the second floor of Kent State Salem’s City Center, which is located at 230 N. Lincoln Ave. in Salem. Handicap parking may be found behind the building.

As defined on its website, Lincoln Park is a tuition-free public charter school that was founded in 2006. It offers world-class training for Pennsylvania students in music, theater, dance, creative writing, media arts, and health science and the arts, along with a flexible and challenging academic program. All of these opportunities are provided in a working performing arts center, equipped with numerous amenities.

Lincoln Park is dedicated to providing student-centered service in a professional and
compassionate manner. The school utilizes a highly-trained and committed staff, which includes a number of professional artists. Students at Lincoln Park benefit from individualized educational strategies, tailored to each student's needs, interests and abilities, and designed to empower every student to succeed. Berklee College of Music graduate James Petroff directs the 22 member guitar ensemble whose players range from beginners to advanced.

“For this performance we’ve chosen some of our more advance players,” Petroff said in a
recent phone interview. “The students will play a mix of jazz fusion and rock, and our guitar soloist will play ‘Over the Rainbow.’”

Other songs include “It’s Just Talk,” “Take the A Train” and an original piece, “Corner Pocket,” which was arranged by Petroff.  Vocalist Corrine Savage will also join the group on her original piece, titled “Gone.” One of the group’s pieces will be performed with the help of a computer.

Kent State University and Lincoln Park work in tandem to create educational opportunities for their students. Kent State University’s world renown faculty and staff work with the charter school’s students in a collaborative relationship that looks to help better communities in the
tri-state area.
