PTA and OTA Students Spread Holiday Cheer Physical therapist and occupational therapy assistant students from Kent State University at East Liverpool held their annual Christmas party at the Robert Bycroft School in Lisbon. As part of the program, $2,500 was donated by students in the physical therapist assistant (PTA) program, who raised the money by raffling off wreaths filled with lottery tickets.

Kent State Salem Communiversity Choir Presents “Holiday with Style.†The Kent State Salem Communiversity Choir is celebrating its 21st season this year with its annual Christmas concert. This year’s concert, “Holiday with Style,†is Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of the Kent State Salem City Center, located at 230 N. Lincoln Ave. in Salem. It is free and open to the public.

Undergraduate Research Presentations Dec. 6 and Dec. 8 Students from Kent State University at Salem will present their research in posters on display tomorrow and Thursday in the student lounge. Students from Human Physiology, Understanding Young Children, Parent-Child Relationships and Introduction to Nursing Research classes will participate.

Kent State’s OTA Students Attend National Conference In September, 22 students from Kent State University at East Liverpool’s occupational therapy assistant program, along with 13 faculty and staff members, participated in the Occupational Therapy Association’s Hill Day. Kent State East Liverpool students were joined by others from across the nation, including occupational therapy practitioners.

Kent State’s Summer Boot Camp A Success Before attending the summer remediation program, Boot Camp, math was student Tammy Moore’s most difficult subject. Upon entering the program this year, she took the University’s assessment test, COMPASS, and then spent eight weeks working on a computerized program called ALEKS.

Kent State Salem Professor Earns International Recognition Chris Carlson, associate professor of biological sciences and horticulture technology at Kent State University at Salem, recently received the Award of Merit from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), an international organization comprised of 22,000 certified arborists from 47 countries. The once in a lifetime honor is given for outstanding and meritorious service in advancing the principles, ideals, and practices of professional tree care and arboriculture and contributing materially to the promotion of the ISA.

Update: Kent State Salem's Health and Sciences Wing As Kent State University at Salem students start a new semester, construction crews ramp up the work they are doing to the campus’ 16,000-square foot gymnasium, which is being converted in to a state-of-the-art medical learning facility. The multi-million dollar project will convert the campus’ under-utilized gymnasium into a learning space. The new facility will accommodate the campus’ nursing and radiology programs, faculty offices and a new bookstore. A floor will be added within the gym volume to allow an additional 9,000 square feet of future lab and classroom space.

Spring Enrollment is Up Enrollment spiked again this semester. Kent State East Liverpool and Kent State Salem saw an increase in students on opening day, Jan. 10. Kent State East Liverpool’s population augmented 6.8 percent from 1,346 to 1,437 and Kent State Salem’s enrollment increased just over 16 percent from 1,754 to 2,036 when compared to the same time last year.

The campuses are taking a proactive approach to possible situations that could arise in a classroom, or on campus.

Salem Community Foundation Awards More Than $500,000 in Tuition Assistance. Since 1998, students attending Kent State University at Salem have benefited from the generosity of The Salem Community Foundation. Each semester the foundation offers scholarships to students residing in Salem City or Perry Township who are attending the Salem Campus. Students must be pursuing their first associate or bachelor’s degree. The award is up to 15 percent of tuition.
